This year Black Friday falls on Friday 26th November 2021. The date is always the first Friday after the U.S national holiday of Thanksgiving, which always falls on the fourth Thursday in November.

Black Friday is an annual shopping event where online and high street stores offer fantastic discounts to shoppers. It is widely regarded as the start of the Christmas peak shopping season and the busiest shopping day of the year.

It originated in 1920's America when retailers would slash prices on the day after Thanksgiving to take their accounts out of being "in the red".

The first recorded use of the term is linked to the crash of the U.S. gold market on Friday 24th September 1869.

In 1960's Philadelphia, police officers coined the term "Black Friday" because they had to work extra-long shifts to control the mayhem caused by hoards of crowds flocking to the city on the day after Thanksgiving to shop for Christmas bargains.

In 2010, online retail giant Amazon introduced the concept of Black Friday here in the UK. Fast-track to 2021 and the momentum of this annual shopping bonanza shows no signs of abating, with more and more retailers hosting not-to-be-missed Black Friday events.

Cyber Monday is the Monday after Black Friday and, this year it will fall on Monday 29th November 2021.
