Bank holidays are something we all look forward to. They provide us with a chance to down tools and take a little extra time just for us. With the summer rushing by, you'll want to pack in as much as you can into your weekends, so we've picked our three favourite cities to visit for a long weekend.
One city that always gets our attention is Barcelona, the colourful and vibrant heart of Catalonia.
You'll find great things to experience everywhere you look, and the locals here have a certain, infectious verve for life. There's medieval history, and you're always surrounded by the exceptional architecture of Antoni Gaudi, while heritage is intertwined with the modern bars, restaurants and stores, as city shows off its proud legacy. Whether you're exploring the bustling, cobbled streets of the old town or mixing it with the locals on Las Ramblas, it's easy to lose track of time, but you'll be rewarded for venturing deeper into this magnificent city.
Vantage point - take the small hike up to Turó de la Rovira, which rewards you with outstanding panoramic views of the capital of Catalonia.
The train journey up to Scotland's capital is incredibly scenic, worthy of the trip alone, but it's the city of Edinburgh you'll undoubtedly fall in love with. Its tight and weaving streets make for a fantastic weekend break, and you'll never feel rushed or short on options in this fascinating historical city. For the August bank holiday weekend you'll arrive for the climax of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where heartfelt storytelling and belly aching stand-up comedy, cultured exhibitions and extraordinary theatrical performances take centre stage. In its 70th year, the world's largest performing arts festival only adds to the city's already rich history. Once it's over, you'll be itching to come back again.
Living history - the iconic Edinburgh Castle is the spectacular backdrop to your stay, dominating the skyline and well worth a visit.
The Dutch capital, known for its artistic history and elaborate canal system, is one of Europe's most desirable cities. The cycle-centric city makes for a great getaway. Whether you're taking it easy, or diving right into the nightlife, Amsterdam caters for everyone; with boutique hotels, and quirky bars and restaurants throughout the plethora of cosy back streets. You'll fall in love the city's unique architecture, where narrow houses tilt at impossible angles. While fascinating museums and perfect public spaces will inspire, all while cyclists' bells echo to fill the city with character and personality.
At your leisure - explore the city at your own pace. Get a different view from a canal cruise, or take a cycling venture to Vondelpark via the Van Gogh Museum to immerse yourself in the city's spirit.
Whatever you do this bank holiday, get out there and find something new to experience.
