Here, is the Aspinal Guide on how to care for your leather. We will take you through all our different finishes and how best to treat and care for them...
Leathers in general
Think of leather as a friend, it needs to be loved, cared for and nurtured. Leather skin is vulnerable to harsh conditions, expecially in the winter months, so here are a few generic tips to get your bag through to spring without the flu.
Keep it clean - Don't let your handbag get dirty, as this will stain the leather. To ensure this doesn't happen, wipe your bag clean with a warm damp sponge.
If it gets wet... - Leather isn't a fan of water in all forms; snow, rain or ice, so best to avoid them if possible. One of our Umbrellas, could be the perfect solution to side step this problem.
Give a little back - Through using your bag, despite doing the above, your bag will get worn down. So you need to give to some love back, a gentle feed with Hide Cream will do exactly that.
Our nubuck leather is water resistant, however any excess water should be wiped clean and allowed to air.
Aspinal Nubuck bags also don't like direct sunlight and heat for prolonged periods of time as this may cause the colour of the nubuck to fade unevenly.
Remove any dry surface dirt with a dry soft cloth, then lightly brush the leather in small circles to bring up the nap and restore the natural character of the leather.
Python snake, alligator and stingray are all examples of exotic leather used by Aspinal. Over time, as you use the handbag, the skins may crease or the scales may lift slightly. When this occurs it is important to stroke the scales in the direction in which they naturally fall to avoid being broken or damaged.
Skins are generally more fragile than leather, and should be treated with the utmost care. It is important to keep the skin dry, but in the event that it does get wet, the liquid should be quickly dabbed at with a clean cloth until the liquid has been absorbed.
Be careful not to expose exotic skins to direct sunlight or heat for too long, as it may cause fading to occur.
You should avoid putting your exotic product on rough or sharp surfaces as they can be scratched easily.
Exotic skins dry out a lot faster than more generic leathers, we therefore advise you to apply a leather conditioner that is made specifically for your chosen exotic skin.
Silk is a delicate, luxurious fabric and needs to be treated with care. To achieve the sumptuous depth of colour on some products, the fabric undergoes an intense dying process and despite laboratory testing, in some cases, the dye can be a little loose.
As with any luxurious fabric, it should not be worn for everyday use, as continual wear will wear down the pile of the fabric and cause darkened patches.
You must dryclean the silks only, and try your utmost to take your silk to a specialist dry cleaner, with experience of handling delicate fabrics.
Rubberised Finish Leathers
As with all leathers, the skins will age naturally so the finish may fade or you may notice colour transfer onto this leather therefore we recommend you take extra care when wearing these products with other strong colours or dyed fabrics.
To keep your bag and accessories looking its best, store in a box or dust bag when not using it and avoid water and prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight.#
To make sure the finish stays looking as good as possible, please don't use any solvents or cleaning products on your rubberised bags and accessories.
The best way to clean your product is with a soft and slightly damp cloth. The finish can scratch, so try to avoid any contact with any abrasive surfaces. Aspinal of London cannot assume responsibility for the eventual deterioration and mishandling of the product.
Crinkled & Metallic Foil Leathers
Given the delicate production process you might notice variance in the finish and the finish may scratch over time. As with all leathers, the skinswill age naturally so the print and finish may fade or you may notice the base colour show through if the products becomes damaged.
