Fashion has long looked to the military for inspiration.
Consider khaki-coloured trousers, which are now a wardrobe staple for men, but were originally worn by British armed forces in India. Bomber jackets, previously known as 'flight jackets,' have also made a comeback of late, in vibrant silky fabrics. Originally worn by the Royal Flying Corps in Belgium and France, bomber jackets featured high wrap-around collars, tight-fitted wrists and waist band and a zipped front in order to keep them warm in open cockpits while flying. Quintessentially British trench coats were invented as a waterproof alternative to coats of a heavier, less practical fabric, and were developed during the first world war to be worn by British Army Officers.

But what is so appealing about military-inspired fashion? Perhaps it's the rich colour palette; their beautiful range of colours, from dark greens and khakis to bright reds, gunmetal and gold embellishments are perfect for sleek winter dressing.
Another pleasing aspect of military dressing is its strong silhouettes and smart tailoring- evidence of this can be seen everywhere from high street fashion to the runway, in small details such as blazers with structured shoulders.
This season, Aspinal of London features a luxe neutral 'moss green' leather across its autumn/winter collection, from the iconic Marylebone Tote to smaller leather goods such as our classic London Ladies Purse. This military-esque shade is perfectly on-trend and, even better, is an easy colour to weave into your wardrobe.
Naturally, much of the inspiration behind army uniforms is nature itself; fashionable camouflage print was, of course, originally designed to enable soldiers to blend in with the outdoors. The theme of nature also runs through many of Dykalo, Aspinal's Creative Director's designs. The brand's spring/summer 2013 collection drew inspiration from Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden, with bold floral prints across handbags and soft accessories. This season, Aspinal takes us on an adventure through a fantasy fairytale forest, capturing the magic of the woods and the wintry beauty of wild creatures.
